The Gift of Camp - #1 Recharging in the Wilderness

This holiday season we will be doing a series of posts that we are calling 'The gift of Camp'. Every few days we will be discussing a different benefit of camping in general and Birchwood for Boys specifically. We feel strongly that Camp is an amazing experience and something that we want to share with everyone; so please feel free to comment, email us or share these posts on your social media if there is something that you particularly agree with. We really look forward to hearing from you and sharing Camp with as many people as possible.

Spending time in the outdoors can be a truly restorative experience. 

 

 Life for young people is so hectic in this day and age; after school activities, sports and homework are taking up more time than ever. Come the summer, it is so easy to just sit at home and relax playing video games and watching tv. However, our experience has indicated that, too much screen time often has the opposite effect and instead of relaxing us it makes us tired and lethargic.

 

Research has shown that spending time in a wooded area is good for your mind, body and spirit. A 2010 study found that participants who walked in a forest had lower blood pressure and levels of cortisol (a.k.a. the stress hormone). This makes Camp the perfect place to come and recharge our batteries and reset. It is an invaluable time and many parents have told us that they immediately see the positive impact that it has on their kids.
